General Requirements for Undergraduate Studies in Canada

A general outline for the students, who are interested in applying to a university undergraduate program in Canada, is provided below. A variety of programs are available to choose from. However, specific requirements for different universities will vary and interested candidates need to keep a check on specific requirements.

Successful completion of the equivalent of a Canadian secondary school academic program with high marks.

Proof of strong proficiency in English (or French if studied in French) by way of a language proficiency test (For example TOEFL, IELTS).

For proficiency in French, Francophone Universities generally mandatorily require international students to complete their own test.

Some institutes offer other forms of French or English proficiency assessment test; two options would be 1) either you’ve appeared for their test or 2) if you’ve successfully completed their language program.

To sum it up, the minimum requirements for an Undergraduate Course in Canada are:

  • 70% in 12th grade
  • TOEFL : PBT: 580-600 min. (depends upon course)
  • CBT: 237-250 min. (depends upon course)
  • 12th grade level Maths
  • The Requirements for Bachelor’s Degree/ Diploma / Certificate Course are:
  • Flexible admission
  • IELTS score : 6 / 6.5 overall – As per the course and institution’s requirement
  • TOEFL : PBT: 550 min. CBT: 213 min.

General Eligibility Criteria for Postgraduate/ Masters courses

In order to get admission into a postgraduate study program in Canada, the candidate  needs to fulfil certain academic and other conditions which are required by the institution you are applying to. A few of the most common requirements include:

  • 2-3 years full time work experience
  • GMAT: 580-600 min.
  • IELTS score: 6.5 overall given that no band is less than 6 or as per the course and institution requirement
  • TOEFL: PBT: 580-600 min. (depends upon course)
  • CBT: 237-250 min. (depends upon course)
  • 4-year Bachelor’s degree mandatory (If your bachelor’s degree is of 3-years, then you must have a 1-year Master’s Degree in order to be considered eligible for the program) 70% over. (May be subject to change).
  • One might be required to furnish written samples/copies of published work/portfolio.
